Colossians Recommendation
It's been over two years since I made a commentary recommendation. For Wesleyans, I've recommended the NIV Application Commentary series if you are going with a series. But ideally, you would buy commentaries a la carte, one by one.
Anyway, I'm willing to recommend Joel Green's 1997 commentary on Luke as my first choice for Luke, if you want to buy just one Luke commentary.
I'm also willing to recommend Robert Jewett's 2007 Romans commentary as the best one commentary to buy on Romans (although it will put you out a pretty penny).
See you in two years with more... :-)

I agree with you on Green's Luke Commentary. I want to look at Jewett's Romans Commentary, but it would have to go some to beat Doug Moo on Romans. May I also suggest you look at Daniel Block's two volume commentary on Ezekiel. I'm currently teaching a study on Ezekiel, looked at several commentaries at the Wheaton College library. Block's stands way out in front of any other I've seen. It's just fabulous!
I wish I could say I was better at the OT commentaries. I'll keep my eye out for Block...
You recommended Jewett for Romans, but what do you think about Witherington's commentary on Romans? Roger Olson recommends it as the best commentary from an Arminian on Romans. Maybe Jewett isn't from that perspective, but then I would have expected Moo's commentary to get on the list. Just curious as to your reasoning.
My favorites aren't theologically oriented but original meaning oriented. Moo takes on some of the "bias-freeing" developments of the post-E.P. Sanders era but in my opinion doesn't go far enough (so I don't think Paul ever struggled with a guilty conscience, not even in the past. I always find Witherington uneven. Sometimes he's good, sometimes he's idiosyncratic but he expresses every opinion as if it's obvious and the reader can't tell the difference between when he's on a ledge and when everyone agrees with him.
Jewett is mammoth, and I've only used it a little, so I'm open to changing my mind, but I've really liked what I've seen so far.
