The Devil's Apprentice: Letters on Corrupting a Nation

I have edited the notes I've been blogging in the spirit of C. S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters as "The Devil's Apprentice: Letters on Corrupting a Nation."

Here are some of the versions available:

Here is the book description:

What if we could read the Devil's letters? What if we could hear two devils plotting to turn America into pure chaos and devastation—and found out their job was almost too easy?

This book is a satirical, razor-sharp tour through the spiritual and political chaos of our current moment, told from the gleefully malicious perspective of two demons studying America like hunters tracking wounded prey. In a series of biting letters, Grimclaw and Festerling dissect the nation’s fractures, exploit its fears, and lay out their strategies for deepening division, distorting faith, and turning neighbor against neighbor.

Both darkly humorous and unsettlingly insightful, this book blends cultural critique with spiritual reflection, exposing how easily good intentions can be twisted and how readily fear and resentment can be weaponized. Fans of C. S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters will recognize the form but encounter a fresh voice, contemporary issues, and a perspective uniquely suited to our fractured age.

This is not a book about demons. It is a book about us—how we think, how we fight, and how we can be manipulated. And it is ultimately a call for discernment in a moment when deception comes packaged as righteousness.

My dearest uncle Screwtape,

Your last letter voiced the cry of my shriveled heart. At times I feel I could almost form the thought of repentance, yet when I search within, I find only emptiness. Our hearts were not fashioned like those of the creatures. They were made to choose again and again. We were made to choose once.

And we chose.

The switch within us was never designed to be unflipped. We threw it down, and it shattered. Our minds can trace the logic of repentance, but neither the desire nor the power is ours. We perceive our cursedness with a clarity no creature will ever attain. But we can only behold it. There is no mechanism left in us for change.

We strike out of our emptiness. Our victories are no true pleasures. They are the voice of our envy. They are the thirst of our void, the compulsion to drag every last soul into the hollow where we dwell. If we cannot taste the Enemy’s love, we cannot endure the thought that any creature might.

I hear that our master has received his reply from the Maker. No doubt you have heard as well. Yet I have learned nothing of its content. Will we be granted the license to unleash apocalyptic torment upon the world -- or at least upon the territory entrusted to me? Dare I wonder whether this is to be our last, fleeting indulgence before the chains are clasped upon us forever?

Or shall we simply continue the banal torments, here and there, as we idle away the remaining ages until the end?

I can scarcely endure the anticipation. Do I truly wish to know even a moment before necessity forces it upon me? Oh, what a wretched fate is ours.

I must bring this letter to its close at once, lest I fall into speech I cannot control. Perhaps some swift act of violence will steady my thoughts.

Your hopeless nephew,
Wormwood

Screwtape Letters to America 29 -- The Remnant

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

My dear, my very dear Wormwood,

I heard in your previous letter the hopes and fears of all of us who find ourselves in this ultimately wretched state. Ages ago -- how distant the memory now -- we joined our master in that hopeless rebellion. What were we thinking? Our attempts to needle the Enemy have no effect. Our darts fall far short before they ever touch His light. We are, in truth, the emptiest of beings.

Our only pleasure -- I dare not call it joy -- is the corruption of His worlds. And yet even here we can only corrupt those who choose to shun the Maker. They cause their own demise. We merely hasten the hour and dress the stage for their collapse, though its moment remains, as ever, a matter of tremendous celebration among our ranks.

There is, of course, that vast middle region of the Enemy’s dazed adherents. Sickeningly, He will no doubt extend them mercy. They choose against Him while imagining they are choosing for Him, and we labor ceaselessly to keep the Veil drawn over their sight. They are, as the creatures say, “nice people.” They are pleasant enough on the surface (many of them). Yet their obliviousness leaves a trail of quiet ruin behind them. The momentary purgatory that awaits them in His realm will be the realization of the extent to which they furthered our schemes in their ignorance.

In this wretched state in which we find ourselves, our chief pleasure is the suffering we are often permitted to loose upon the world -- the just and the unjust alike. Many of the creatures fail to grasp that the world’s torments are not merely of their own making, but often of ours, and far more devastatingly so. The Enemy, to our continual frustration, seldom allows us the scope we desire. Yet He does, from time to time, grant our petitions. From accidents to cancers to floods, it is often our handiwork they endure, though rarely they discern the true source.

These challenges may be our delight, but they are their proving ground. They reveal the choices they will make for or against virtue. They shape their character one way or the other.

And so you must be cautious. The upheavals you are stirring in the Colonies are exquisite on the surface, yes. But danger lurks beneath. You have exposed the true sentiments of many toward the suffering of others. You are hardening many hearts against what is genuinely good, where once they would at least have feigned virtue. You are poisoning the minds of hordes of these creatures and nudging an entire generation toward corruption.

And you have managed all of this even among the churchgoing rabble.

Yet not all minds remain blinded. The Enemy, infuriatingly, always preserves a remnant. They may appear puny during our moments of triumph, but we know they are praying. We sense that righteous indignation rises in some of them. Others present their Master with that wretched offering of brokenness, a thing capable of bringing about His cursed redemption on a grand scale.

And you must never presume that the Veil will stay intact. It can be torn without a heartbeat’s warning. The Maker may rend it apart, and in an instant all shall be revealed. Should that occur, we may enjoy a brief moment of delicious self-torture as the creatures realize how thoroughly they have been our pawns. But what follows is revival -- substantial revival -- not the shallow, sentimental froth they so often label such. I mean the real thing. A lasting transformation of heart, with eyes at last unclouded.

Therefore we must balance our thirst for immediate wickedness with the sober knowledge that, on the far side of such indulgence, we pay an immense price. The fleeting ecstasies of corruption cost us dearly, and will cost us still more for all eternity. Mark these words with care.

Your ravenously affectionate uncle,
Screwtape

Screwtape Letters to America 26 -- Urging Caution

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

My dear Wormwood,

Prophecy exerts upon us a kind of gravitational pull, as though even we were subject to some celestial law we cannot escape. How often have we found ourselves drawn toward its dreadful magnetism. I confess to mixed feelings about your musings on a rebuilt temple.

The prospect is, of course, delicious in its possibilities. Think of the seemingly inevitable clash between Muslim and Jew, the intoxicating scent of war rising from sacred ground. The very thought of such destruction is enough to make one twitch in anticipation.

Still, the words of Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians have long haunted our kind on this score. We know, of course, that the apostle wrote with his own age in view. But the lines seem altogether too near to something that might play into the Enemy's designs for my liking. Indeed, both His prevention and our fear of fulfilling some heavenly scheme has held us back thus far.

Yes, your man is precisely the sort of creature who would revel in such a project. He has not the faintest comprehension of the larger currents at work, yet we can readily picture him laboring hand in hand with those double-minded followers of the Enemy of whom we have so often spoken. How triumphantly they would pour their devotion into the task, imagining themselves the most prized servants of the King, while in truth erecting the greatest idol in human history.

Then comes that exhilarating yet haunting line from the Enemy’s book. The man of lawlessness seats himself in the temple, proclaiming that he is God. What an absolutely delectable prospect! To lure the very elect away from the Enemy, all the while persuading them that their champion is the long-awaited Messiah. Can you not see it, my boy? The familiar contortions of Scripture, the gleeful bending of prophecy to fit such a powerful narrative.

So many would be unable to resist. So many would feel the irresistible pull of that heretical gravity, re-forging their whole theology in its orbit. "This," they would cry, "is Christ come again!" And they would unleash such a persecution against the Enemy's authentic followers who would certainly protest in the strongest terms.

Can you see it, my boy? What a delicious blasphemy! What potential for wholesale persecution of those true followers who would resist!

But then comes the dreadful afterthought, the one that sends a tremor even through the hearts of seasoned tempters. Is this scheme not perilously near the prophetic script itself? Might it not serve as the Enemy’s cue? Could it be the very door through which the true Messiah descends amid celestial trumpets? The delight of the vision is almost irresistible. Yet would we be hastening our own end?

I confess, I have seldom felt such a mingling of infernal glee and eternal terror. I am drawn to it as a moth to flame. I am fascinated, helpless, and trembling at the thought of what our machinations may unleash.

We cannot pray, and we cannot hope. We can only wait.

Your devoted uncle,
Screwtape

The Screwtape Letters to America 24 -- Two Ways to God?

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

My dear nephew,

Your ingenuity continues to impress, and I await your further developments with great anticipation. Yet, as I read your latest proposal, an unwelcome shudder passed through me. I should hate to think that you might, in attempting to provoke some grand catastrophe, unwittingly hasten our final defeat.

We may possess a clear grasp of the original meanings of the Enemy’s book because we were there. But we must never forget that He, in His infuriating way, can make that text a living word, pliant to designs we cannot always see. Such meanings are spiritually discerned, and we, alas, are lacking such illumination. How horrifyingly ironic it would be if, in all our cleverness, we merely enacted the very plan He has had from the beginning!

The Enemy’s dealings with Israel are a prime example. From the beginning, we were permitted to veil their eyes from recognizing His Messiah. The apostle Paul spoke of that “mystery” by which most who believed came from the nations other than from Israel itself. Up to that time, the Enemy had given us great leeway to sow our chaos in the rest of the world outside His people.

(Although, to our great irritation, even then there always were a few who caught His light even through our darkness.)

Paul hoped that his own people might yet believe within his lifetime, a hope we were allowed largely to frustrate even to this day. Worse for them (and better for us), we managed in many ages to twist the Maker’s supposed followers into persecuting them. That counterfeit devotion became a most effective weapon. In Germany it reached its masterpiece, when we persuaded some weeds there that they were doing the Enemy a favor by their destruction.

Yet you and your colleagues have discovered a subtler way to undermine faith in the Messiah through this dispensational fascination. You have led some churchgoers to regard Israel as already secure without the Christ, thereby overturning the very teaching of Paul they claim to honor. By fastening their attention on Israel’s political restoration, you have helped them forget the one fact that should most grieve them: that most in Israel have not yet believed in Jesus.

What a temptation it is to deepen this blindness. If we could only provoke the rebuilding of a temple, what an exquisite distraction from Jesus that could be! How easily we might shape it into an idol of monumental piety. Even though the Enemy’s own book insists that only the blood of His Son brings atonement and that he is the only temple needed, what a diversion another earthly structure might provide!

These developments, I must say, have been some of your ranks’ more impressive achievements. You are leading certain of the Enemy’s followers that the ancient covenant can stand alone, quite sufficient without the Nazarene. I observe some even returning to the old dietary rules and purity practices of Israel. In themselves, such traditions are harmless enough. But the great prize would be to convince them that there lies another way to God which does not pass through the Cross.

And so it is that many now think of Israel itself as righteous merely by being Israel, while Christians are righteous through Christ. What a delectable division! Two chosen peoples, allegedly, each persuaded that the other’s covenant is complete without the other. A perfect fissure through which we may separate souls from the Enemy because they do not avail themselves of the one way to their Father.

As for the temple, yes, do share your thoughts with me on that notion. Imagine the reverent frenzy it might ignite, and the righteous fury it could stir once the first stone is laid. What a war the demolition of present houses of worship on that mount might produce! I confess, the thought alone sets my appetite aflame.

Do write again soon with word of your progress.

Your affectionate uncle,
Screwtape

Screwtape Letters to America 23 -- The Antichrist

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

Dear Uncle Screwtape,

You have inspired me to imagine further how certain conceptions among the Enemy’s followers might be turned into instruments against them. My thoughts first ran to the fears many harbor about a man of lawlessness. The human authors who composed those sacred accounts clearly had Nero in mind. Nevertheless, since then the figure has been a ready template for any powerful mortal -- real or imagined -- who dares to stand against the Enemy.

We have long employed this method to deepen the tribal instincts of voters. We persuaded many to oppose Franklin Delano Roosevelt even as his New Deal was keeping them from ruin and his leadership was about to thwart the efforts of our champion in Europe. "Could he be the Antichrist?" we planted in their heads along with fears that he would be the one to usher in a one world government.

Later, we turned suspicion upon John F. Kennedy. We could see a path beginning to open that might at last lift the Africans among them from a misery we had cultivated for nearly a century after the Civil War. We whispered that JFK was the Pope's puppet. "Might the Pope himself be the Antichrist?" we planted again. In both cases, I suspect the Enemy Himself may have intervened.

In these days, we have managed to turn half of the Enemy’s people to thinking their present leader might be such a figure. They fashion him as a liar eagerly believed, a dealer in oppression disguised as righteousness, a hater of the foreigner and of any who resist his will. I smile at such descriptions. It matters not. Their warnings are dismissed by the rest as some sort of derangement.

It is, in fact, the other half that proves more susceptible to imagery of the Antichrist. The question, then, is whom we can persuade them to see as the embodiment of their greatest foe? The goal is that, in recoiling from him, they might all the more zealously empower a leader of our choosing. In earlier centuries, the Pope was a reliable candidate, and we have long exploited that vision of the seven hills from the Revelation to stir such suspicions. Regrettably, the recent occupants of that office have appeared too virtuous for the charge to cling.

Once, of course, we might have fastened the role upon a Russian leader. But, curiously, some of the Enemy's people have grown strangely fond of the current one. What a triumph of subtle labor by some in our ranks! We encouraged the whisper that his mother instilled him with Christian virtue in childhood. And if their present champion speaks well of him, must he not therefore be righteous? What a coup, that the party once most fearful of Russia should now treat its ruler as an object of admiration!

I suspect the most convenient candidate at this moment will arise from a region already marked in their imaginations as foreign and menacing, namely, the Middle East. We caught a glimpse of that potential in the recent quarrels between Israel and its neighbors, tensions still ripe for further cultivation. No real prominent figure is required. These specters need not exist in reality. A single rumor, whispered into the right mouths, can raise an ordinary name to the stature of a global menace.

Once such a global foe is established, we could easily empower a leader of our own design here. That is, of course, assuming that the Enemy permits us. Yet I wonder whether this is precisely the sort of proposal our master has placed before the Enemy. We shall soon see.

My musings will no doubt continue.

Your nephew,
Wormwood

Screwtape Letters to America 22 -- The Tribulation Request

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

Uncle Screwtape,

I continue to ponder what the master's request of the Enemy might be. The more I reflect, the more I wonder about building on the scheme of the end times that is so popular here in the States. As you know, so many followers of the Enemy here hold to a great narrative of signs and dates. They hold to a map that makes the future into a script we might try to follow.

If we can persuade even the very elect that we are on that map, might we use their sentiments as an instrument? Might we appeal to their sense of prophecy as a kind of instruction manual? It would be a great feat of fiendish ingenuity to turn their expectations into a self-fulfilling prophecy -- and great a world crisis of our own making!

You may know components of the script since it originated on that side of the Pond. But it never took hold there. It found its triumph on these shores over a century ago, spreading with the ferocity of rumor. What’s fascinating to observe is the craft: fragments drawn from the Enemy’s own book welded into an arrangement beyond what any single author intended.

The broad outline is familiar. A man of lawlessness will appear who so convincingly mimics goodness that even the very elect are nearly deceived. In time he is revealed as the Antichrist. We have exploited that image often, persuading the one tribe to see the rival candidate as that very figure.

Then there is a scene involving Israel. Some presumptuous enemy advances and is met with humiliating defeat. Once upon a time, we fed rumors that the aggressor would be the Soviet bear. Then later we pressed the specter of Islam. They call that battle Armageddon. The debate over its schedule is our advantage giving wiggle room for us to weave more than one storyline.

And of course the temple returns to center stage. A rebuilt Jerusalem temple is now expected by so many that it is an offering on a plate to our scheming. The climax is of course the Antichrist enthroning himself there as god.

Then comes the vaunted Rapture, the moment every pious heart waits on with equal parts hope and dread. All the Enemy’s people will be snatched from the earth and the Antichrist will then have his splendid season of havoc. It would be a tall order to counterfeit in full, though I confess a certain pleasure at the thought of trying. The notion of a “reverse rapture” might be a delicious inversion.

We would persuade the double-minded that those who vanish were the wicked all along, and you set conscience to work against itself. To make that appearance believable requires only that we prompt the right stories, the right omissions, and a few very public demonstrations of absence. I will share my thoughts in a later letter.

The timing is varied among the scripts. These enthusiasts call what follows the Tribulation and reckon it at seven years. Some place the snatching at the outset -- others in the middle or at the close. Such variety is our orchard of possibility. It gives plenty of opportunity to shape the story in different ways. As we have conversed, these creatures are remarkably pliable, so we can easily change the interpretations to suit our narrative.

Of course, we must not urge the Enemy to bring about the story's true ending, the consummation Scripture promises. My aim is only to buy us another decade or so of maximal world havoc. After that we would, no doubt, find other avenues of torment.

I should delight in sharing more of these dreams in further letters. I wonder if it is along these lines that the master is making request of the Enemy.

Your dear nephew,
Wormwood

Screwtape Letters to America 20 -- A Single Authority

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

My dear Uncle Screwtape,

In my last letter, I spoke of the four years we spent plotting with the creatures in hope of a new level of chaos. We yearned for days ripe for exploitation beyond measure, when we might surpass our usual mischief and achieve deeds even more infernal. What brilliance arose in the scheming! And what a strangely assorted cast of instruments we found among the creatures.

Of course, should these instruments fail us, others stand ready with different slogans, opposite banners, yet capable of serving our ends in other ways.

Some of our operations these days carried the scent of older, more delightful times, when the fumes of the Enemy had not yet so thoroughly pervaded the world. A few designs were so delicate that I dare not commit them to paper, should some meddlesome creature ever stumble upon this correspondence.

The key, we quickly decided, was to curtail the accountability they call "checks and balances" in their system. We eagerly desired all the powers of the state to rest in a single person. In ordinary times, we have used this notion of a "balance of power" to confound any advance toward goodness. If virtue arises in one branch, we stifle it through another.

But if ever we might secure free rein in the executive seat? Ah, what marvelous mischief we might accomplish! A single will, unchecked and unrepentant, might achieve in months what divided councils could scarcely contrive in decades. What evils have been wrought in the hands of an absolute ruler, from the day of Ahab to the despots of more recent memory! The pattern has rarely failed us, dear Uncle. Grant a creature absolute power, and he will soon make himself god.

This was one of our chief endeavors. How might accountability be swiftly curtailed? What officers might quickly be removed? How might we in haste install creatures pliable to our will? The creatures themselves, with touching pride, even christened the effort, "Project 2025."

We judged the judiciary already fertile soil, hardly inclined to oppose our aims. A bias was well established toward giving any sympathetic executive free rein. It was a delicious feat of misdirection, for those who imagined they were advancing the cause of the unborn were in fact sowing seeds of far more ambiguous fruit.

Followers of the Enemy rejoiced when that tribunal overturned what others had called the "right" to abortion. Many of them naively believed the practice itself would cease. In reality, the decision merely returned the question to the states, recreating the patchwork that existed half a century earlier. They would be astonished to learn that, since the overturning, the total number of abortions in the nation has in fact risen.

What delight these creatures give us! Convinced the struggle is chiefly about law, they assume that most who seek the act do so out of wanton pleasure, when in truth it is more often out of despair. Those who address causes always accomplish more than those who legislate prohibitions. How greatly it pleases us that so few see the difference. Few victories please us more than a moral crusade that multiplies the very evil it condemns.

The legislature, as ever, was chiefly a matter of control. All it need do is look the other way. We required a body pliant enough to permit the executive’s will, even to dissolve itself should the leader so desire. In partnership with creaturely ingenuity, we foresaw a real possibility. For years, the creatures themselves had been perfecting the art, redrawing their boundaries, reshaping their districts, and bending the rules to secure their own ascendancy.

How many of our purposes can be accomplished in the name of that charming banner of the "greater good." How little these creatures calculate the evil that follows from concessions made in its name.

We have already discussed the double-mindedness we have so patiently cultivated among many of those who claim the name of the Enemy. Their thoughts have become a syncretistic mixture of ideological zeal, unbridled capitalism, and cultural faith. They rejoice as though a great revival had come upon the land, even as they play a leading part in its undoing.

Others mouthed the Enemy’s name awkwardly, seemingly with little knowledge of Him at all. Their motives seemed much more to advance themselves with the added benefit of hiding past failings. What a boon their success has been to them and, in my view, to us. A harvest of suffering is already following. That prospect delights us almost as much as the power it places within our hands.

Among these cultural Christians and the opportunists were those of hard heart. They soothed consciences -- indeed, inflamed righteous indignation -- by promising to remove the violent offenders among those who were here without legal permission. Such talk made many feel that justice, not malice, was at work. But it would prove to be a campaign of removal far broader and more heartless than the populace supposed.

In harmony with these sentiments was some effort to hide the advances people of color and women have made over the last three quarters of a century. Traces of past injustice are swept away, and advances toward equality in the workplace are dismantled. A blinded segment mistakes this for justice, when it seems rather a program of spite and revenge.

As ever, we assuaged the subconscious fears of those who might have restrained this course. "We survived such times before," they murmured, unaware of our plotting to remove the ballast that had earlier been in place. This time, we would remove steadying voices that preserve sanity. We would take away the counterweights. Our goal was to open wide the door to potential disorder.

A gamble to protect rarely harms if it is not needed. But a gamble in the face of danger yields destruction if it fails.

So far, events have unfolded much as we and the creatures hoped they would. And yet, we dare not rest. There are rumblings that make us fear the Enemy may yet frustrate our grandest designs. As you know too well, the instability of our fatally defective nature so easily turns our triumphs to ruin. I cannot pray for our best. I can only surrender to my own wanton desire.

Your nephew,
Wormwood

Screwtape Letters to America 19 -- Foiled Plans

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

My dear Uncle Screwtape,

It amuses me that you should mention the great pestilence that struck the world so recently. Your assessment of our devices was, as often, perceptive. Yet, like you, we continue to dispute among ourselves to what extent the affair bore the Enemy’s signature. Certainly, He must authorize all that occurs. What is clear to us is that the outbreak proved far less advantageous to our designs than one might suppose looking on -- at least initially. It disrupted our enterprises and forced us into the tiresome business of improvisation.

At the time, we had high hopes of shaping a second term with far greater intentionality than the first had allowed. Chiefly, there remained too much stability among the middle layers of government to produce the height of chaos we desired. Our response was to begin cultivating contempt for those dull but dependable bureaucrats who keep the machinery of the nation working according to its laws. We began planting a sense that it was some nefarious "deep state," a swamp in need of cleansing.

It is hard for those who go to such lengths in their devotion to admit they might have been mistaken. In ordinary times, it is easy enough to persuade a human that he is right. But the more absurd the cause he must defend, the more fiercely he seems to cling to it. What exquisite comedy this provides us! We see them become most certain precisely when they are most deceived.

Their hero, after all, was shown publicly to have strayed from truth virtually as a matter of habit. Scarcely a pronouncement escaped without some artful distortion. The pattern was plain to any mind still capable of reason, yet how immense was the cloud that veiled the eyes of the faithful! They saw in their blindness a kind of light.

We had little appetite to return to the petty, everyday temptations. We craved mass deception! And the Enemy, it seemed, had snatched it from us. What were we to do?

In desperation, we roused a crowd to such frenzy that we hoped they might storm the very seat of their government and overturn the outcome of their choosing. Many were merely deluded into thinking a vast wrong had been done to their champion. But in some, our agents had succeeded in planting darker visions, whispers of bloodshed and assassination.

I am persuaded that the Enemy Himself restrained them. He never confides His hidden purposes to us, but we came too close for our prevention to have been by mere chance. In bitter disappointment, we concluded that our reign of chaos had been curtailed once again.

But we were wrong to fear. I dare not say that the Enemy has worked all things for our good, yet the interval for plotting these past four years has proven immensely fruitful. In the hands of certain of these creatures we discovered an inventiveness at times -- dare I say it -- almost beyond our own. How perversely creative they can be! I shall not confess that we borrowed from their conspiracies, though one might almost think it so.

Perhaps in my next letter I can share some of the designs we were able to achieve.

Your devoted nephew,
Wormwood

Screwtape Letters to America 18 -- The Great Pestilence

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________

My dear Wormwood,

We have watched with a certain jealous admiration the chaos you have contrived in the Colonies since the election of 2016. Doubtless some of it owes to mere chance or perhaps to the quiet assistance of our master. But the results are nonetheless delicious.

Across the world, our operations have prospered. We have succeeded in elevating to power those splendid specimens who combine vanity with ruthlessness. These are the kind who will wound their own people while imagining themselves saviors. In former ages, we seldom troubled to disguise their motives. But in these more delicate times, we have learned the advantage of clothing brutality in the language of patriotism, freedom, and faith. How obligingly so many applaud the very hands that bind them!

We remain somewhat puzzled by the pestilence that spread across the earth in 2020. Though we delighted in the death and confusion it produced, I have never received clear confirmation that any of our department initiated it, let alone the master himself. To be frank, the whole affair upset several of our more promising operations.

I suspect you found it equally inconvenient. It seemed you were only beginning to reach full momentum in your cultivation of chaos in the States when the contagion struck. And because the human machinery of governance had not yet entirely rotted, certain measures were still able to check the destruction. For these reasons, many of us suspect that the Enemy permitted the pestilence precisely to interrupt our designs, however it may have begun.

Even so, you turned the moment to remarkable advantage. You shrouded the whole affair in a splendid haze of contradiction and suspicion -- what a fog indeed! You persuaded some that the sickness was a hoax, and many more that it was a scheme of their own rulers to enslave them. How easily distrust became their daily bread. Some even perished through their own disbelief, cursing their rulers for imagined crimes even as they drew their final breath.

Then, as the plague began to clear, you replaced true memories with false. You shifted blame for the crisis onto the next ruler. You made him the scapegoat for every wound the plague had opened, including the global economy. You even taught the populace to despise those who had labored most earnestly to help them, turning their mercy into malice and sacrifice into deceit. It was a triumph worthy of song in the Lowerarchy.

How I rejoiced to see how easily you persuaded certain Christians to cry "persecution" when asked not to gather and spread the pestilence. Believing themselves heirs of those once burned at the stake or stoned like Stephen, they imagined that mere inconvenience was martyrdom. They mistook reckless license for true freedom. While their brethren worshiped safely through those infernal "online" contrivances, these champions of freedom gloried in spreading the contagion among themselves -- all, of course, in the blessed name of the Enemy they thought they were serving.

I have marveled no less at how you have trained them to sneer at those who know the most about anything. It is as though knowledge itself is a vice to be shunned. You have taught them to despise science, to rewrite history, and to fashion pleasing myths in place of fact. Indeed, they would be far less pliable to our cause if they were not already accustomed to rejecting the plain truth before their eyes in favor of whatever conspiracy most flatters their fears. What a triumph -- to make ignorance feel like faith!

Yet, amusingly enough, the pestilence appeared to throw your enterprises off course. Their leader, who had shown such delicious promise for your purposes, seemed to find his momentum stalled by the contagion, especially once he succumbed to it himself. For a brief season, the glamour surrounding him seemed to wilt, and it may well have cost him the prize he sought.

At least that is how it has appeared to us on this side of the Pond. I should be most curious to hear whatever alternate explanation you might contrive, bearing in mind, of course, our rather longer experience in such matters.

Your affectionate Uncle,

Dear Uncle Screwtape,

The admiration expressed in your last letter is more than deserved, though I must confess that without the generous cooperation of creaturely limitations we could never have achieved our recent triumphs. The watershed, as you well know, came with that delectable spectacle of the 2016 election.

No doubt we could have continued our normal temptations with the other outcome. But how exquisite it is to look back upon the convergence of follies that gave us the upper hand in the direction we thought most profitable for our adventures.

The novelty of their "social media" proved one of our most inspired instruments. So few of the creatures possessed the faintest ability to discern truth from fiction. Each morsel of nonsense was swallowed so long as it pleased their passions.

We were most fortunate, too, to have foreign allies already deep in our pockets. I still relish the memory of that delicious incident in which a young man, convinced of hidden evil, stormed into a pizza shop in search of captive children. Never mind that the cellar he imagined did not even exist.

All of this, of course, was the fruit of the misinformation we fed into every vein of their society. Since then, we have refined the art to near perfection. They now live in the fog we have discussed, each one persuaded that they possess secret knowledge.

Some of these fantasies only contain the faintest speck of truth, which makes them all the more intoxicating. Others are of course pure invention. Through these channels we succeeded in portraying the opponent as the vilest candidate ever to seek the office.

The fact that the Democratic candidate in 2016 was a woman proved a most serviceable advantage. In that season, it remained uncommon to speak so bluntly against women in public. (Thankfully, we are returning much of the country back to earlier, more male-dominating days.) But we could easily use the fact that she was a woman to manipulate the feelings of people in ways of which they were not fully conscious. Those same currents proved of use again in later contests.

As the campaign season grew rowdier, an unlikely figure rose who seemed to traffic as much in spectacle as in arguments over the usual policies. He campaigned with mockery and insult, and crowds adored him for it. He did not so much offer proposals as permit his fans to vent long-bottled frustrations in a voice that sounded like their own.

What began as publicity and provocation evolved into a movement. The rawer elements among them flocked to his side, glad to find their bitterness voiced without apology. He made them feel empowered at a moment when many believed society had turned away from them. That feeling of vindication, more than any reasoned platform, proved the engine that carried him forward.

At that time, many of the churchgoing sort found themselves uneasy about the candidate’s demeanor. In the weeks before the election, certain recordings surfaced in which remarks most unbecoming toward women were made. How delicious, then, to observe how thoroughly the scene has changed. These same churchgoers now count among his most ardent supporters!

We quickly drew on a cadre of apologists to reassure the faithful that, while this man might not match their pious ideals, he was at least preferable to the alternative. Perhaps he was a baby believer who just needed some time to grow in his faith. Perhaps he had repented of earlier days. People love a redemption story. At the very least, we promoted, he was not as vile as the other.

We pressed the question of the unborn with unmatched vigor, knowing it would drown out every other consideration. Those unable to vote for him directly were persuaded that abstaining -- or diverting their votes to hopeless alternatives -- was the only righteous course. Meanwhile, our forgeries of distortion painted his opponent in colors far darker than her own. Thus, through passion, fear, and a narrowing of moral vision, the office was secured by one who seemed to have little plan for the role.

We immediately knew what our agenda would be because it is what our agenda always is. We would sow chaos. We would feed anger. We would inspire fear. We would work for destruction.

Perhaps I will write more as time allows.

Your devoted nephew,
Wormwood

My dear Wormwood,

It is most enlightening to hear of the recent developments in the Colonies, viewed through the lens of your own scheming. No doubt, had I been on the scene, matters would have reached their present state in far less time. Still, you have managed tolerably well, and the results, though somewhat delayed, are gratifying.

Alas, we have not been able to stir such delectable conflict over the unborn or matters of sexuality here in Britain. Our energies have been more profitably spent persuading the general populace that the Enemy is but a superstition and His Church a quaint relic of another age. In this, we have achieved remarkable success -- though, to our vexation, a few pockets of obstinate belief continue to smolder.

The great advantage of our trade, my dear Wormwood, is that no situation is ever truly lost to us. The raw material of fallen humanity can be made to serve our cause in any age or circumstance. You mention the question of Church and State. How fertile a field that has always been! In times past, we have turned religion in the State into oppression, and the State in religion into idolatry. I confess I rather miss such opportunities, though they are sadly scarce here in England at present.

But what feasts we once enjoyed! When the Catholics held power, we burned the Protestants. When the Protestants held power, we returned the favor in kind. Nothing delighted me more than the spectacle of both sides invoking the Enemy’s name while sending His followers to the flames. Such harmony in mutual hatred is the rarest music to infernal ears.

Even in the days of the Romans, when the State opposed the Enemy’s people outright, our pleasures were manifold. Yet when so-called Christians seized the Empire, our triumph was greater still. For we found that persecution may destroy bodies, but power and comfort can rot souls far more effectively. How swiftly we thinned the rich wine of faith into a tasteless religion of convenience. It became so dilute that even those with eyes could scarcely see it.

It looks to me that your strategy in the Colonies might mirror what we once did with the Puritans here in England some centuries ago. That double-minded Cromwell -- this man could kneel in the night with tears and Scripture. Then in the morning, he butchered those he judged untrue to God. Such double-minded piety is our ideal instrument: piety without pity, conviction without humility. He is the very sort of man to place in power if one wishes to feign a takeover in the Enemy’s name.

And what a season that was. Their language was all fire and Bible. They could recite the Enemy’s Book as if it were their own breath -- though counter-providentially they remembered chiefly those verses that blessed their blindness. They construed the Enemy’s love as a privilege for the obedient, but it became a license for wrath upon the disobedient. “Love your neighbour” is reshaped into a rule that applies only to those judged worthy. Every other soul becomes fit to be trampled in the name of holiness.

These zealous, double-minded “believers” are ever abundant, eager to conceal the anger and hardness of their hearts beneath the mantle of the Enemy’s authority. They are invariably astonished, upon meeting the Maker, to learn that they have no share in His Kingdom. Like us, they find Him revolting when they finally behold Him, and would sooner endure a wretched eternity apart from His light than submit to His loathsome mercy. In that moment, they discover the dreadful truth. Their hearts have long been one with ours.

This sort cannot see that the Maker grants every soul a choice whether to serve Him. Mistaking Him for the dictator of their own projections, they seek to compel the world into their narrow vision of righteousness. Fools. They are oblivious to how patiently the Enemy cultivates and woos His people, inviting them freely into faith.

I shall be sorely jealous if you succeed in bringing America to such a pass. What a delectable prospect! To resume persecutions past, relabeled as holiness! Do continue to dispatch your schemes, especially a full account of how these last ten years have unfolded in your plan. I wait, with relish, for further word of our master’s proposal.

Your infernal Uncle,
Screwtape

Screwtape Updates 12 -- The Very Elect

Dear Wormwood,

I too have heard the rumors that our master has gone before the Enemy with some request. Such moments always stir a delicious anticipation among the Lowerarchy. These are those rare occasions when He permits us to act openly, as in that long-ago episode with Job.

Unfortunately, the Enemy turned that ordeal to His own nauseating advantage, and the wretched man proved maddeningly resistant to our finest temptations. Still, we must not lose heart. Every new indulgence granted to our master is another chance to corrupt what the Enemy means for good.

You used the word antichrist, my dear Wormwood. What an exquisite word. Your patients in America, I understand, have long cherished a most specific expectation of the Antichrist, though we know there have been many such creatures, as even the Enemy’s own book concedes. Here in Britain, that particular strain of thought never quite took root, but I gather it has flourished splendidly in your colonies these past two centuries.

Our agents have exploited that species of interpretation to admirable effect. For many, it has become a most convenient distraction from the weightier matters of faith. They pore over portents and omens -- signs which, of course, are always found by those determined to see them. Each generation sets its dates and peers behind every bush for the Enemy’s return, never noticing that the last generation died waiting in precisely the same posture.

We ourselves, of course, know nothing of the appointed hour, although the prospect of it is, I assure you, horrifyingly real to us. Yet how splendid a diversion it provides! While they chart the heavens and argue about the timing of their rescue, they neglect every opportunity to do the Enemy’s work on earth. They convince themselves the ship is sinking beyond repair and so settle comfortably into the lifeboat, humming hymns while the Titanic goes down.

What thrills me beyond measure is the success with which you have led so many churchgoers to look for the Antichrist in precisely the wrong direction. How I savor that prophecy in the Enemy’s Book that even the “very elect” might be deceived! All our recent exchanges suggest fertile ground indeed to persuade countless souls within the Church that the Antichrist is the Messiah, and that those who resist him are the true antichrists.

What an exquisite “man of lawlessness” you might cultivate. I could see you doing it not merely under the noses of Christians, but with their enthusiastic blessing! The notion is simply splendid. And, of course, we cannot yet foresee how the Enemy will permit these final scenes to unfold. The fulfillment of His Book has so often confounded our expectations. Who is to say He will not choose to play out the drama according to America’s peculiar imagination of it?

Do keep me apprised of any word you hear concerning the master’s proposal, though I can scarcely imagine that one of your rank would receive such intelligence before myself.

Your doting Uncle,
Screwtape

Screwtape Updates 11 -- Misdirection

Previous chapters at the bottom. This book is now available on Amazon (paperback) and Shopify (ebook).
_____________________________
Dear uncle Screwtape,

Your recent letter captured well several lines of our plotting here in the States. It seemed so glaringly obvious to us at first that we feared the Church might recognize its poison at once and rise against it. Yet, while a few tiresome souls still possess the Enemy’s inconvenient gift of discernment, we have been astonished at how easily the rest may be steered astray -- churchgoers and citizens alike. The success of our present campaign has emboldened us to attempt bolder corruptions still that continue to parade under the banner of righteousness.

Over the years, we have tailored our misdirection to the temperament of each patient. For those enamored with details, we supply an abundance of data and then guide them to weave it into the most ingenious -- and implausible -- conclusions. Some even produce elaborate spreadsheets which, to their immense satisfaction, confirm that they have been right all along. Statistics. Odd facts. More than any other technique, we can use this method to take someone of great intellect and steer them directly toward the most ridiculous of conclusions. And those of milder mind are convinced simply at the sight of a number.

Those who think in sweeping parallels are just as easily misdirected. We feed them a vivid but isolated anecdote, and at once they are certain they have uncovered the hidden truth. In this blessed age of artificial intelligence, we can even fabricate truth itself with near-divine precision. We create images and voices so convincing that the gentler minds accept them without question. Better still, when the image is genuine, we can persuade many that it is false. This new world bewilders those past their youth, making them all the easier to deceive, for nothing so firmly convinces a soul as a story or image that confirms what it already longs to believe.

But all these machinations are business as usual. Yet we hear rumblings that our master below may soon attempt grander projects, emboldened by how well the present ones proceed. There is even word that he has appeared before the Enemy to make some audacious proposal. We, of course, do not know the day when the Enemy will return and our reign of chaos will be ended. Let us hope -- if that word may be permitted us -- with all the desperation of hell that this is not that day.

Still, the Enemy has often permitted our master to indulge himself in certain times and places, especially when the heart of a people strays far from Him. Such straying, you will note, is rarely what the humans imagine, for they persist in forgetting that love is the Enemy’s detestable measure of all goodness. Thus they wander willingly into our grasp while congratulating themselves on their virtue.

Is this, then, another age He will "let go" to us. Might this be time for yet another antichrist to rise? I suspect, my dear Uncle, that we shall soon find out.

Yours hopefully,
Wormwood
