John Oswalt in IWU Chapel Quote

"The problem with the world is not the male genitalia."

I have come to expect these sorts of comments from Dr. Oswalt... :-) The only exact quote I remember from Old Testament Hermeneutics with him at Asbury was, "God has no penis." Having seen some of the figurines from ancient archaeology, we can make some allowances for the prevalence of such themes by an Old Testament scholar. His rhetoric on circumcizing the heart today was, to say the least, quite vivid.

Love that guy! He was the preacher for one night at CCCU camp meeting in Circleville, Ohio a few years back.

We had just finished a worship set that unknowingly (I hope) prescribed to a more Reformed understanding of sin and salvation. Being who he is, and the CCCU being what it is (holiness denom.), Oswalt stood up and started with, "Oh, yes, woe is me, I'm just a sinner saved by grace, blah blah blah. Isn't this a holiness camp meeting?"

It was beautiful.

Ken,

I remember that infamous quote caused quite a furor at ATS when you published it as the "Quote of the Week" in the Short Circuit. Good to hear Dr. Oswalt hasn't lost his touch after all these years.

His tie between the circumcision of Abraham and the circumcision of the heart was genius! If only Wesley could have been so clear in his sermon on the circumcision of the heart.

Pswalt is the Wilbur Williams of another institution!
