Happy Epiphany!

The beginning of the semester at IWU has slowed down finishing Meier and any interesting Epiphany post I might do (I had originally thought of doing Explanatory Notes on the wise men in Matthew 2). Meier should appear mysteriously as a Monday post below :-)

But I should at least say Happy Epiphany. This was the date of celebrating Christ's birth before December 25 became the day. The twelve days of Christmas are the days from Christmas to yesterday. Now today is traditionally a day to think of the wise men visiting Jesus.

While we have the wise men around the manger in our Christmas plays, Matthew of course doesn't have a manger. Matthew pictures the wise men coming to Bethlehem probably some time after Jesus was born. Herod is said to kill children under two years of age in accordance to the first appearance of the star, so Matthew likely pictures Jesus as around two years old when they come.

Happy Epiphany!
