I always thought this was a "difficult" teaching, as it seems to be presented as an unbendable "rule" that is rather counter to all Jesus' other teachings showing compassion for the powerless. Or as you put it, it's understood and interpreted according to "the spirit of Jesus" or the spirit of the God's law vs. the strict letter of the law. And within its first century CE Galilean context! Very enlightening.<br /><br />BTW, I found your blog via Dr. James McGrath's blog.
